It is an enormous challenge to work self-employed as a mother. Our daycare system does not support irregular working hours, so Nayda often just has to come along when I go out to photograph.

However, it is almost impossible to do justice to both a baby and work at the same time.

As a self-employed mother you are punished twice, starting with pregnancy, where there is no maternity protection. Daily sickness insurance only pays once a woman is confined to bed due to complications. If, during pregnancy, certain types of work can no longer be carried out, she simply earns less. Period.

That’s why on June 14 I once again have no choice and will be out on the street with Nayda and my camera. And this time I won’t whisper to her: “Everything is fine, you don’t need to cry,” but instead say: “Yes, go ahead and scream — they should all hear that this is not okay.”
